Google has started introducing a new real-time location sharing feature in the Google Messages app. This update allows Android users to share their live location directly within a conversation, making it easier to let friends or family know where they are while traveling.
Previously, users often had to switch to apps like Google Maps to send their live location. With this new update, everything happens inside the chat window itself. The feature works with Google Maps and Google’s Find Hub service to display movement updates.

The Real-time Location option works differently. It continuously updates the person receiving the link so they can see the sender’s movement as it happens.

When someone chooses to share their real-time location, a small location card appears in the chat showing that sharing is active. Users can also choose how long the location should be shared.
The available options include:
1 Hour
The location is shared for one hour from the moment sharing begins.
Today Only
Location sharing stays active until the end of the day and automatically stops at midnight.
Until Turned Off
The location continues to update without a fixed end time. The user must manually stop sharing.
Custom Duration
Users can choose a specific time period for sharing. The maximum allowed duration is 24 hours.
These options allow users to control how long their location is visible.
Simple Controls to Start or Stop Sharing
Google designed the feature to be simple to use. Once location sharing starts, the chat displays a location card showing the current sharing status.
To stop sharing, users only need to:
- Open the conversation.
- Tap the location card.
- Select the Stop option.
Location sharing settings can also be managed through Google Maps or the Find Hub service if needed.
The recipient receives a Google Maps link, which opens smoothly and shows the live location without requiring additional steps.
Privacy and Security
Messages sent through Google Messages continue to use end-to-end encryption, meaning only the people in the conversation can read them.
However, location sharing itself works through Google Maps and the Find Hub system. Google processes the location information according to its Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
This means the feature follows the same privacy standards already used by Google’s location services.
Testing and Availability
The feature was first noticed during testing of a beta version of Google Messages. Some testers were able to access it directly from the attachment menu inside chats.
