WhatsApp May Soon Let Meta AI Expand Photos for Status Updates

WhatsApp is developing a new feature that could make sharing photos in Status updates much easier. The upcoming tool will use Meta AI to automatically expand images so they fit the full-screen vertical (9:16) format without requiring users to crop important parts of the picture.

At the moment, square and landscape photos often leave empty space above and below the image when shared as a Status. Cropping can solve this, but it may remove important details. The new AI-powered feature aims to provide a better solution by intelligently extending the image instead of simply cutting or stretching it.

AI-Powered Photo Expansion

The feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.33.2, indicating that it is currently under development.

According to reports, users will be able to access the option from the photo editing screen. After selecting an image, they can open the editor, browse the available filters and editing tools, and choose a new “Expand” option.

Once selected, Meta AI will analyze the original image and create additional visual content around it, allowing the photo to fit the vertical Status format. The process is expected to take only a few moments. If the generated result is not satisfactory, users can run the feature again to receive a different version.

How the Feature Works

Instead of stretching the image, Meta AI generates new content that naturally extends the existing scene. This helps preserve the original photo while filling the empty areas with AI-generated details that blend with the surrounding environment.

The final quality depends on the original image. Photos with clear backgrounds and enough visual context are more likely to produce natural-looking results.

Availability

The AI photo expansion tool has not been released to the public yet. It is still being tested during development and is expected to reach Android beta users before a wider rollout. As with many WhatsApp features, the company may refine the tool based on testing and user feedback before making it available to everyone.

This upcoming addition could make creating full-screen WhatsApp Status updates more convenient while helping users keep their photos looking complete and visually appealing.
